Diy canopy question

Building a canopy. Any suggestions on how to finish it. I am hesitant to use clear coat like polyurethane but I also want to seal the wood well too since I'll be using ply wood.

Will any finish products harm my tank in any way? (I.e. Oil based sealant)

Any suggestions on what finish products to use?

I did polyurethane on mine. Lasted for years.
