I've heard that these aren't too hard to make. I believe there are two types, Sulfur media and plastic media. Any information on the difference would be greatly appreciated.
 
You may want to look at a Turfscrubber.

I'm planning to build one when I get time
and abut more money.

Here is one I built. I worked very well and got my nitrates down from 200 to arund 40-50 quickly. But it became too much work and I switched to vodka. It just the large contraption in the blue bin with the clear top.

I have used a diy sulfur reactor which looks like the reactor just posted. Years ago I made one with yards and yards of air hose coiled in a 5 gallon bucket. The longer the hose the better it worked.

The two small reactors on the side of the tank were DIY GFO and carbon reactors. I pitched them as the ones you buy were just easier to maintain. The other reactor next to the denitrator is filled with ARM to bring the PH of the effluent from the denitrator back up before it goes back to the tank.
