Hi all, I don't mean to bring up an old thread, but for Iron I just dump a couple of Iron supplement tablets from CVS into my sump 2x a week is there any reason we cant do this with manganese?

tank is around 220 gallon total water volume give or take water displacement from the contents in the tank

This is the form of manganese I have. Loud Wolf states that the total Manganese content is 32%.

If I wanted to be able to dose .5 ml of a solution to raise manganese concentration of my 303L tank by .1 ug/L what concentration should I make my solution?

I don’t trust google or AI to explain the formula to me…could you??

I also find that goni's like potassium and I will see a noticeable difference when I add this to our system

But sea salt is already 1.1% potassium, it's a major component

As folks have suggested, Fergon tablets (ferrous gluconate) are a good DIY for iron.

Do you have access to chemical to buy manganese salts?

I was un able to find Fergon brand on the shelf. Would these be comparable other than then the different amount per dose?

Yes, that is likely fine, Just let any undissolved solids settle out.

@Randy Holmes-Farley I’m sure it’s unlikely possible and not sure if it’s previously been discussed. But could the Fergon tablets and manganese chloride tetrahydrate be combined into one solution? If so what would then be the possibility of say dosing it in your ATO? Though dosing each separate by hand when needed is no big deal was just curious on this. My refugium/marco algae is about 40% total water volume so was just curious if there was a way to simplify dosing even more. Besides saving money by dosing your two recipes for iron/manganese vs using chaeto gro or something similar. Which also has me questioning on how accurate of a dosage is really needed as chaeto gro seems you just dose quite a bit and recommended daily dosage.

What’s your thoughts on chaeto gro additive? It has several micro elements in it. Do you feel all of those are necessary? Or case by case situation? I would think not as I’m sure you would have come up with your own recipe? My build will have large volume of macros and just wanting to get everything planned out prior to it running here very soon. Previous tank was just chaeto pretty large volume size but have never had to dose anything for it. Going on 20 plus years of monthly harvest. Assuming nitrates and phosphate keep it happy. Guess I’ll see how it goes and have supplies on hand to dose iron and manganese if needed. Plus maybe your ammonia recipe if nitrates are an issue.

Manganese(II) chloride tetrahydrate is 28% manganese by weight.

Here's a recipe:

Dissolve 1 gram in 100o mL (grams) fresh water. Manganese = 280 ppm.

Take 1 mL (1 g) of that mix and dissolve in 1000 mL of fresh water. Mn = 0.28 ppm (=280 ug/L).

Add 1 mL of that to 100 mL of fresh water. Mn = 2.8 ug/L

Add 13.5 mL of that to 100 gallons of tank water. Conc boost to tank = 0.1 ug/L Mn.

I get a little nervous with chemistry workings... do you have a recipe I could use for mixing a 5 litre batch/bottle that I could dose straight from without having to dilute. I have scales that will measure to 2 decimal places. My system is approx 1200 litres accounting for displacement.

I think dilution is still the best way to go for accuracy, but if you want...

Natural manganese level is about 0.2 ug/L.

Let's suppose that you'd add 0.1 ug/l in one dose.

That means you need to add 0.1 ug/l *1200 L = 120 ug = 0.12 mg Mn

If using a solid that is 28% manganese (as above), then you would need to add 0.43 mg of solid to the tank.

If you want to dose volume of 10 ml of the dosing solution, then you'd want a concentration of 0.43 mg/10 mL, which equals 43 mg/L or 215 mg solid added to 5 liters of RO/DI.
