Upps delete please double post! PS: How dumb not to allow edit? Whaaaa?

Heatsink USA makes the best heatshink. It offers both mass and surface area. They also have numerous sizes. If you go solderless the Makers LED Heatsink is not bad for the price except its a bit narrow for most tanks.

For 30" penetration I would use a quality optic like Carclo or LEDLink. They gave us the Highest PAR when we tested them against other optics with similar spread. The angle of the optic would depend on how high your fixture is over the water.

The current 5 watt Cree XT-E and XP-G offer the best bang for the buck. If you drive them at 700mA they are much more brighter than other 3 watt LEDS and are about 10-15% brighter than the later Cree XP-E.
