DIY Manganese - Calculation Help

Thanks Jim, I think I see what you mean. Can you confirm?

Can I just follow the first step here:

Dissolve 1 gram in 100o mL (grams) fresh water. Manganese = 280 ppm.

Then to target 0.88 ug/L in 350 US gallons, use 4.16 mL?

My numbers agree with @JimWelsh 's recommendation.

350 gallons = 1325 L
280 ppm = 280,000 ug/L

0.88 ug/L * 1325 L = 1166 ug

1166 ug / ( 280,000 ug/L) = .00416 L = 4.16 mL

How often will you be dosing this?

Thanks chaps. Mixing up a new batch now. @Hitman not sure yet, I thought I was dosing already! Clearly not. I used a mixture of this and the Red Sea Iron supplement but that has now gone and is expensive. The iron I made with some off the shelf tablets also didn't seem to work :( but that's for a different thread.

I was putting some in when my Chaeto wasn't growing as much so will stick with that method for now and then do another ICP test soon.

Hey, at least it was 1000x underdose, and not 1000x overdose! Maybe we should start a new thread on "Homeopathic Reefkeeping"! :D

:) I think it's worth mentioning that the original "off by 1000x" error was in Randy's recommendation of 13.5 mL of the 2.8 ug/L solution to raise 100 gallons by 0.1 ug/L. If that's repeated anywhere else on the forums, it's probably worth fixing.

Did anyone ever confirm which recipe was correct? And does anyone know how the concentration compares to tritons or ATI’s? @JimWelsh thanks in advance

Well, I've been using Jim's version and do seem to get deteable levels on ICP now so guessing it's correct! I have had to up my dose as either the corals or Chaeto seems to just suck it all up very fast!

Thanks, are you dosing as advised in ICP? Ie 2ml/day In an 800L tank as triton recommend I do.. I’ve been using there Mn for awhile but it’s so expensive, not sure if the concentrations are similar to Jim’s version though

My recipe was off by a factor of exactly 1000.

Thx Randy, do you know the concentration of the new calculated mix? Is it close to the 100000ug/l of tritons Mn?

Ignoring everything to this point, let’s just make one to something close to 100 mg/l, which is what you posted as 100,000ug/l.

Like before:

Manganese(II) chloride tetrahydrate is 28% manganese by weight.
Here's a recipe:

Dissolve 1 gram (which contains 280 mg actual manganese) in 2.8 L fresh water. Manganese = 280 mg/2.8 L = 100 mg/l.

Brilliant thankyou so much

@Mortie31 I started off dosing 0.88ug/l a week which was 4.16ml for my tank with the recipe below. I'm now dosing 16.64ml per week which gets me detectable levels on ICP. I believe my 3ftx1ft wide piece of thick Chaeto consumes most of this and thrives.

I bought the Manganese online and £10 worth will last me decades! I don't buy any supplements in branded packaging. It's just too expensive. The one thing I do buy for overall dosing is ATI Pro to take care of Cal/Alk/Mag / Most of the trace elements.

I also dose Iodine with a recipe from here which is the same deal, £10 for a lifetimes supply.

350 gallons = 1325 L
280 ppm = 280,000 ug/L

0.88 ug/L * 1325 L = 1166 ug

1166 ug / ( 280,000 ug/L) = .00416 L = 4.16 mL

Hi.
Thanks for your results.
I have one question maybe you know by your long research on DYI for trace elements once you have a big tank.
Do Manganese Mn2 also require a chelating agent like Iron Fe2 , to overcome the oxidation in our reef tanks?
I mean Mn ether chloride or sulphate.
Thanks.

It should need not need chelating. I’m also not convinced the iron does, but it may stay in solution to a greater extent if you do. The iron I recommend is a gluconate, but dosed inorganic iron likely rapidly binds to organics in the water anyway.

Where are you purchasing Manganese...pls provide a link.

Thanks

I have some of this arriving today: HiMedia GRM685-500G Manganese (II) Chloride Tetrahydrate, Extra Pure, 500 g

Will see how to mix up a liter to have as my stock solution to begin my dosing regiment. I'm positive my ICP test will return 0 since I no longer do any water changes and only supplementing my system going forward. I am currently running the Red Sea program though and the Iron+ contains manganese, but will be switching to using my own once I finish the Red Sea program that I currently have. Figure over the long run, it'll save me $$$ so I can use that savings in more SPS.

So just to be clear after all the confusion and seeing as I am thick and my head hurts.
Can somebody just give the full correct makeup for mixing and adding to say a 100 gallon reef tank showing 0 manganese on test or very close to it please.
Thank you.

Thank you.

Let's suppose your target is 165 ng/L, which is a typical ocean value (it varies a lot). Triton uses a set point 10x higher.

100 gallons is 379 liters.

So a NSW value of 165 ng/L x 379 L = 62,535 ng (0.063 mg) in your tank.

From the stock recipe above:

Manganese(II) chloride tetrahydrate is 28% manganese by weight.
Here's a recipe:

Dissolve 1 gram (which contains 280 mg actual manganese) in 2.8 L fresh water. Manganese = 280 mg/2.8 L = 100 mg/l.

Thus you want 0.063 mg/100 mg/L = 0.00063 L or 0.6 mL added to the tank to high NSW levels. About ten times that amount (6 mL) if you want to high the Triton set point.

Thanks Randy, that's just what I was looking for, much appreciated as always.
