So I'm thinking of building my own sump, but have some questions. One is how small would be too small. I'd be installing this on a 30 gal bow front tank, but my under cabinet space is only about 9"x14". I can't find any premade ones that fit those dimensions, hence why I'm looking to build my own. Good thing is I work for a local glass shop and we throw away glass all the time. I hoping to build a sump with enough room for a skimmer, some room for extra live rock/ mechanical filtration and hopefully still have room for a small refuge. So if anyone has any thoughts on layout and "do-ablity" I'd very much appreciate the help.

That should give you enough room. There are tons of plans online.

My suggestion is to design it with your equipment in mind. For example, make sure a compartment in which the water level doesn't vary is deep enough for a heater. Make sure the return chamber is big enough for the return pump you want to use.
Good luck & post pics when your done.
