Has anyone ever done this and do you think it would work on a 30 gallon tank? I want to make a sump but don't have a lot of money to spend and I don't want to drill into the tank
 
I have made them, you really need to use a aqualifter pump for safe operation so that pushes the cost way up.. I ended up spending as much making one for my current tanks add on refugium than I did buying a eshopps for the main display...

It cracks me up about him. You do realize you can't be infringing on his copy rights because he gets 90% of that stuff from people who have been doing it since he was a kid.

Google aqualifter. You use it to suck out the air continuously to keep the siphon going.

IMO these things aren't really safe unless you use one. They aren't extremely reliable even if you do.

I built one back in the 90s and it worked but it was very finicky.
