DIY Radeon clone?

I looking to build a light for a 20 gallon high tank I want to start any suggestions and I have a 55 I have a 48" orbit I'm on it not strong enough to keep Coral would you build a whole new light or build something to supplement it

prolly easier to build a new light than suppliment and exsisting.

could build a really simple light with a 24in rapid led bar heatsink. and a couple chinese led pucs (the smaller ones not the big 120mm ones I used) and for the 55 just double the light and do 4.

you can have made to order ones done something like a 4 channel 16 chip like this:
CH1 4xRB
Ch2 2x395 semiled 2x420 semiled
Ch3 2xRB 2xBlue
Ch4 1xWarm White 1xCool White 1xCyan 1xRoyal Blue (swap in another white for royal blue if you like more 14k look vs 20k)

Where do you go for custom arrays and I thought you were big on line or mint you wouldn't add that

I do like mint. Can always add them next to the arrays. Kiwilighting is one I know that will allow customization

So with 4 arrays 4 channels each let's say add 4 mints how many drivers and what size would I need and power supply

6 1 for RB, B, White and Mint. then 2 for the violet channels (they are higher voltage diodes). then would need a 48vPSU such as a meanwell that can run 10% over voltage, or a 56v psu

another option to look at and i'm considering is skipping the arrays this thread is talking about and go with indvidual stars.

a group of 1 Luxeon M RB 1 luxeon Sunplus Whites 1 luxeon Sunplus Mints and a 3 UV/Vs would make a very nice array and. 4 of those groups could all be run on 3 channels if you don't mind mixing white/mint or 4 if you want them separate.

Efficiency, better control, making something the way you want it vs how some company thinks something to be done. Some just like to tinker

Yeah, I did a build about 6 years ago, it still lights my tank. I have had a driver go bad, I had a spare laying around and fixed it.
I have a back up power supply on hand, I can fix a short, replace burned out LEDs but havent needed to yet.
Basically, I am the warranty dept, and I spent half the price a similar light at that time would have cost.

I also like to tinker so it works for me, and any part would be a few dollars to replace if something goes wrong.

Probably when I am out of school, I will look at changing up the spectrum, add in some blues and maybe try out some lime chips.

if it were me i'd do this:

4xRoyal Blue
2x420 2x395
2xNeutral White 1xCyan 1xRoyal Blue
2x470nm blue 2xRoyal Blue

most commercial fixtures include too much white. I don't think anyone with hydras or radeons use 100% white. so i'd use less white and more RB

Cool, thanks for your reply. At us, people usually go with more white. There are some suggestions to keep whites and blues at the same level and to go with royal blues 20% below that level. But here, everyone is going with a lot of royal blues and a few whites.

So with your design, I could drive everything at the same current and the same percentages to get a good spectrum?

Yes. That's the idea no wasted power. 4:1 is the ratio i run on my office tank and run both at 100percent.

It's a blue acro puc
4 rb
1 violet
1 neutral white
1 blue
1 cyan

Horrible picture but color is close to accurate

Thanks for your help I did some additional research and have seen that most people drive their AI's with high RB and B values and Whites at approx. 20% or so. Can't wait to get the build started

Look at each puc run at a resonabler amount to be in the ballpark of a xr15. Use that to extrapolate. I'd say go overkill and do 9 (you can run 3 per set of drivers so mine as well add one more.

Maybe customize them a bit and change the blue channel to 2x blue 2xrb since they have way to much 470nm blue. Heck I might even do only one 470nm.

I haven't decided on which boards I'm going to go with yet but I do plan on tweaking the leds used in them. I've been reading quite a bit and I'm not 100% on which way to go there. I do want to pull some whites and agree that 470 is mostly a waste.

my thinking is you prolly want to spread the leds out more than just over the center. 36 in deep is a very wide tank. I'd look at doing 2 rows of leds. 1 T5 LEDS 2 T5 then LEDs then 1T5

also take a look at the chat in the General DIY led thread. that was started mainly to just discuss something here but be kinda broad discussion. if it were me and I was doing my 30cube over agagin with what I learned from tinkering. i'd go for more a clustrer of different leds. I think something to look into would be maybe getting 4 of stevesleds 4ft heatsinks. (raited at 100watts per foot passive, so really good by specs)

then each 4ft bar would be equiped with 4xk16 Luxeon rb, 4xSunplus White, 4x Sunplus Mint, 4x470nm Blue, and 8x420nm Hyperviolets from steves led. have them in two rows in the arrangement I mentioned above with the t5s.

I’m going to jump on this thread. I saw a pair of radeons over a tank yesterday and decided that’s what I want for lights. But I’m not paying $700 x3 for a set lol. The noopsch lights look very cool but according to the recommendation of 6 lights over a 4 ft tank it’s more than I want to spend also. I would rather build my own to my own spec. I will be using a reefpi to control them I just have to decide how many channels I want and what pucks to use. I skimmed the thread but need to read a little more in depth and figure out an enclosure.
