Okay so instead of buying refugium at a store I came up with this idea to build one as it is for a very sizeable tank and it's hard to find an appropriate sized one. So here's the idea hear me out and see what you think: Building a box out of plastic egg crate and plastic zip ties to hold pieces together. Lining the inside of the box with plastic canvas and/or vinyl window screen so the algae doesn't fall through. Then attaching this to the inner wall of the saltwater pond (won't be enough water level in the filter for one). A lid would be made the same way with stainless steel hooks to clamp it down but still be removable for access. Now to circulate water through it I would place an air stone inside the box to push water aside, pulling in more water or could I just place an air bar below the refugium instead as I know either way it creates a circulating current? Using the air bar below would allow me to use a wider air stone surface area leading to more addition of O2 to that tank plus I could use more air pressure. The refugium like this would mainly be for taking out nitrates but would catch some floating detritus each feeding for crustaceans.
What all beside macro algae do you usually put in a refugium? I've heard copeopods and small crustaceans but what types/species. I'm guessing small species of snails and shrimp that would otherwise be gobbled up in the tank itself. Could I do just a crap ton of algae so I don't have all that snail poop adding to the over all bio-load of the tank?
