Are aluminum screen frames fine to use? Won’t they rust over time? If I paint them what paint is safe to use?

Just get one of the kits from BRS that are already black. Aluminum shouldnt really rust on you, while it does oxidize the aluminum oxide wont flake and penetrate like Fe2O3

I was looking to get one from them but the kit from Home Depot is only 13 bucks plus 8 for the mesh

I made all mine with frames and hardware from HD; cicada netting off Amazon (much better than the BRS stuff).

The BRS frames are the exact same as HD and Lowes sell. Only thing I couldn't find at HD/Lowes was the netting as all they had was bird netting which had too large of holes.

I got the black netting that home depot had to me looks much better than the white netting. Home depot is all we have here no lowes

I 3d printed corners that overlap the corners of my tank frame so they stay put. Just need the netting now.

does the size of the square holes make a difference? I noticed they have different sizes in BRS? Also, those nettings from HD or Lowes, is that the regular window screen mesh?

Yes, the size of the holes matters. One, if they are too big, fish can still get out. Two, if they are too small, they block light. Yes, the stuff at lowes is regular window screen and is not appropriate for our uses.

Thanks.... why not just go with glass covers on top. Especially for those aquariums that have a frame with divided sections. I suppose people use open tops for ventilation, but isn't that what the sump does?

I did have a glass top but water would condense on glass. Also would have to clean weekly due to build up.
