So I plan on using a protein skimmer in my sump, but I really want to build one. I've read that it can be done and I think the best set up seems to be a counter-current skimmer. I was wondering if anyone had any plans on it? I have an idea in my head and I'm using a lime wood air stone in the bottom. Any help would be highly appreciated!

With the improvements in needle wheel based pumps, the counter-current skimmers have become a thing of the past. They are still good skimmers, don't get me wrong, but the efficiency compared to a needle wheel skimmer is just not there. Typically you see the counter-current skimmers in the extremely large builds like public aquariums and such since they can be made extremely huge.

If I was you, I'd look into the new controllable DC pumps and build something to use those as they are efficient skimming machines.

When you decide on a plan, be sure to post up pictures as watching these projects come to life is an amazing process.

Thanks! I was looking into a counter current because of cost but if I can find a needle wheel for a good deal I'll probably go that route
