DIY Sump question

Hello everyone. I am drawing up some plans for a sump I am wanting to convert a 20 gallon tank from. I was wondering if anyone has any luck with having coral frags within their sump. One of the plans I was thinking about setting up an eggcrate to use within the middle of the sump so was wanting to see if anyone has haf any success with this.

lighting and flow is key. its not impossible just takes more money for the right lighting and flow.

I've heard of this done before. It works quite well if to have the space supposedly.
