DIY Sump

Wiz, very nice sump/fuge system you got there; looks like the macros and pods are thriving. Do you ever clean out your (phosphate) pad? If so, how do you do it as to not disturb/kill any pods? I find the pods in my filter floss/pad also love to breed and hangout there but after time it collects detritus and such and I haven't cleaned it out bc I'm afraid of killing all the life in there

What are you using to cut the acrylic...edges and circles...? And what kind of bulkhead are you using. I'm going to have to also build mine in sections because my stand has a single door.

Table saw with a nice triple chip blade. Holes were just regular old hole saw. All available at Lowe's.

I also did some stuff with my router. Like the bigger square holes or teeth for overflows.

Should I build it out of acrylic or glass?

I like working with acrylic better for sumps. But it's personal.

What acrylic adhesive would you recommend? Weldon #4 or Weldon #16 ?

I use #4 . Have to quick with it though. If it's not in the right spot your not moving it after.

when I first started I would actually stand there and pick as many off as I could while rinsing it. That took forever though. The best way I have found so far, is this. Take a bowl or pan that's big enough to fit the pad laying down in it put some water in the bowl from your tank just enough to cover the new pad in the bowl then put the old pad on top of the new pad in the bowl so that it slowly dries. As it dries the pods bury down into the new wet pad I've had pretty good success with this it's the best way I have found. I change the pad once a month

Genius!! I will give it a try. I was dreading attempting to pick the pods out; figured it would be time consuming and that I'd still miss majority of them. This method sounds much more promising. Thanks!

Awesome, thanks 1398killer. I'm just wondering, how does water flow through it? Your water level is going to be 15 inches except for where your return is.
