I want to build a new sump for my 250 gallon tank. I want one bigger than what I have. My question: Is there any reason why I can't build it out of Stainless Steel? I know acrylic would cost less but I own and run a welding company so steel is much easier to work with.

An acrylic one is still easy to make. Stainless would rust/corrode over time and you wouldn't be able to see what was going on inside it. Not sure if that matters much or not, but it can be convenient.

yea it would definitely corrode quickly and release lots of heavy metal into the tank. How big are you looking for I like to use the big plastic storage containers they work fine.

I thought the metal would release heavy metals that would eventually be very bad for corals no matter what you did?
