I will be building a new tank stand and within the next couple of years I'll be upgrading to my 80 breeder (Deep Blue Frag Tank). I'd like to build a stand to the dimensions of that tank now (48x24 footprint), I plan on putting 4 cross bars for support in the middle and using dual 2x4's for legs. Do you guys see a problem with that stand being able to support the 40 breeder until I get the 80 gallon? I will have a 1/2 inch plywood on top as well for added support.

thoughts suggestions?

i would add an additional cross member going the length of the stand for added support and will the legs be tied together somehow at the base of the stand if not just a bump to the side of the tank could send it crashing over

I built my stand the same way, with plans to upgrade it. So my tank sits in the middle of my stand with a good foot on each side. I was worried about the same thing as you, so I put an additional "leg" in the middle to brace it. I guess I have the same question as you, even though I've already finished my build.

There will be another box frame at the bottom with 2 cross joins that secure the legs together just like my current stand build, I wish I could add a pic but I'm deployed right now an unable to do so. As far as bumping it that is the most unlikely thing to happen, we don't have kids or a dog/cat and anyone who visits knows not to mess with my reef tank or it's their life lol.

Here's the "general" plan for dimensional stands.

If you use pocket screws, the lime green boards can be eliminated.

No center brace is needed. For tanks 4 foot long or smaller, all 2x4's. For tanks longer than 4 foot, the top boards should be 2x6's....again, no center brace needed.

I would highly recommend a 3/4 plywood top....it helps level out any indiscretions in the dimensional wood.

I would also recommend some kind of skin....from 1/4 inch plywood to whatever floats your boat....it helps in keeping the stand from racking.

Like the diagram Red Fish Blue Fish, will be basically building the stand that very same way but I'll be adding 3-4 center braces on the middle up top and 2-3 on the bottom for maximum support. I'd rather go overboard then go less and risk problems.

i built my stand for my 220 the same way the pic above shows just added more braces going front to back on the top and bottom and no problems with weight

After looking some more I'm gonna go a little bit overboard and go with 2x6's for the stand but will use the same diagram posted above for the build, 3 braces in the middle though and 2 on the bottom.
