Hi everyone,

I have a 125 G 6 ft tank that's been up for nearly a year now and we just bought a Mandarin, however we understand Mandarin's a difficult to feed. I ordered over 10,000 Tisbe/combo from Algaebarn w/ Phyto and plan to dump all of them in our tank after floating the packages, however I understand this will only keep our buddy fed for a short period of time, but it could help culture in the tank... we still feel we should consider a HOB refugium, but looking online people are asking for upwards of 200.00 which seems a bit much for the little they really do from my reading.

So my question to you is, has anyone ever done this w.o a sump on this big of a tank? and do you have any good links or information pertaining to it?

Does your tank have a sump that you could create a little pod factory in? Alternatively, you could set up a culture system. Although I have not done it myself, this looks to be fairly easy and affordable:

HOB refugium should work, but will not be cheap. If you have space in stand, garage, etc, a 10g tank, air pump and light is not going to cost you near what a HOB refugium will.

Looks like a good start to me. I am not sure about filter, but the price is right. I'd put a sponge filter in a tank intended to grow pods.

I would look at CPR HOB refugiums; solid build and affordable. Since you're mainly using this for pod culture, I would buy a size relative to your fish demands vs your tank volume. You should be able to get away with a medium sized one.

I think I have a CPR HOB medium on in my garage. I cannot use it on my new reefer nano. Not sure the rio pump still works but I used for about two months to get a dragonet and was able to grow a lot of pods. Let me know if you are interested.

How much?

A lot of people buy my acclimation boxes to breed pods. It does sit in the tank itself and not hob, however.

I have an acclimation box that's around 8 inches long, and currently have Chaeto in it and have it in the sand near where the Mandaran likes to hang out.
