DIY trickle tower sump

I found this video of this super cheap trickle tower sump. I have a 10g nano reef tank with low stock at the moment. After research I found out that trickle towers produce a lot of nitrate. How can I use different media or change the design to limit nitrate.

for 10 gallons you don't really need baffles, if you want to make it simple , just have a skimmer heater and the return pump in it.

I have a aquaclear 20 hob now. I want to get rid of clutter while also expanding my filtration capabilities.
