Yea I was really confused on this I’m hope that @Randy Holmes-Farley could give an explanation as what why this would happenIn new tanks it is common for alkalinity to dip. I don’t know the reason why but I know it’s nothing bad
Never keep knew that my first thought was something was way off with the chemistry side of it. I appreciate you filling me in on what’s happeningA main reason is the nitrogen cycle. Conversion of ammonia to nitrate consumes alkalinity. There can also be abiotic precipitation of calcium carbonate on pumps and heaters and sand.
Many other organisms also use it. people think corals, but many more do, including some microorganisms.
