3wks into cycle of new tank with carib life rock, live sand, and biospira. Cycle is coming along, I re-dosed ammonia 5 days ago to test cycle and ammonia returned to zero but nitrites 0.2-0.0, nitrates 20 (using red sea) pH has stayed at 8.2 the whole, but dKH started at 10.5, but has slowly dropped to 8.2.

Two questions

1. it is normal for nitrites to lag behind ammonia, correct? is it safe to add my 2 clownfish out of QT now, or should I wait until both ammonia and nitrite zero?

2. is there a reason why my dKH dropping? concern warranted?

thx

I just went through this. My dkh in my new frag tank went from 8.5 to 3.5 during a 2 month extended cycle with no water changes. Simply put denitrification consumes alkalinity.
