Do Acans need a platform to grow on?

My questions as simple as it seems. I’m just wondering if my acans are going to need a platform to be able to keep growing bigger and further away from the small frag plug it’s on now. I always see acans on the sand and I’m wondering if they are able to keep growing out further with just sand as the platform below them. Thanks.

You can grow them on sand but they are more vulnerable to attack from pests then if they are slightly raised

I put them on 3" frag disc, that's usually good up to about 20ish head's or so setting on the sand.
