Do ACRO lovers still HATE us? Poor little Zoanthiniaria.....

I like acros as much as I like zoas, but not as much as I like torches! haha

I have found myself buy more and more zoas for my main display and frag tank. I think I have a total of 20 different types of them, but I have isolated them to either a medium sized rock island or small rocks so they can grow for fragging.

my favorite as of now is some gobstoppers cause of the color pop on them, but I don't have any yet! soon..... soon...

I don't like zoanthids. They are pretty but they taste funny.

I don't have a favorite and my memory is getting bad so I can't remember their names and my vision is blurry.

20 years in the hobby, any zooanthid I've bought has been eaten or lost color - I have a variety of greenish, grayish, brownish zooanthids, and they don't hurt anything and fill in space.

I don't understand paying big bucks, there are a wide variety of cheap colorful zooanthids, and I've never seen anything that made me say "Wow" like some stony corals have.

I also prefer (and have) a large reef tank. Acropora and other corals form dramatic displays as they grow into larger colonies, but zooanthids are much more interesting if you only have a few in a nano tank. Large zooanthid colonies just look colorful nondescript mounds.

I have had Zoa gardens in the past and I have enjoyed the ease of maintenance and beauty that comes with them. I have a SpS dominant tank right now and I wouldn’t put them in there just for the reason that I’m focusing on other corals. It’s a preference thing for sure but I definitely have not lost the appreciation for them and the beautiful variety they come in.

I answered “other”. To me Zoas are fine. But they are irrelevant. I like SPS and acropora especially because they are reef building corals.

Now if I had another tank, I would be very tempted to do a Caribbean photosynthetic gorgonian system. The Caribbean gorgonians are quite diverse and colorful.

I've not had good luck with keeping any alive. My parameters got way off and I thought from what I read that they could withstand a lot. They're forgiving, etc.
All of my died. My candycane, my mushrooms, my rock flower anemone, my acans all okay. Zoanthids? Nope, melted. Disappeared. Idk what to think

Back in the day, in my reefing adolescence, zoanthids we're becoming all the rage with everyone because of their beautiful variety of colors and the speed in which they reproduced! With everyone except the SPS guys and gals that is! You had one group that loved them so much they started a whole website to talk about them (eventually reef2reef) and then you had the group, called stick lovers, that would do anything to eradicate them. Is that still the case today and how much do you like or dislike our little button polyp friends? Let's talk about it!

Im with you, I have no idea what most of mine are called, but when I see something that I like, I buy it. and the reason for not knowing what they are called is: I was sold a Midas Zoa and then I had 3 different people tell me 3 different names for it. and they even explained to me the difference.... I just told them that I liked the coloring and features. haha

Yes i like the look of zoa's ( brighter the better) im new reefer and like more newbies am attracted to softies and lps.
More brighter the colour the better ,reds,oranges and yellows and in one the pictures below is a water melon.that super cool.
And last picture of zoa' that numerous different colours just blows my mind and even more so the colours of that nudi branch with all colours of the rainbow.amazing how it mimics colours of surrounding corals to give it best possibility of not being detected ^_^

I love them. When I started in the hobby back in the 90’s everything was mostly green or orange with a minor amount of variation. Sure you had some red wellosyphilla, purple tipped elegance, etc. Zoas where either green dragon eyes or Texas trash. Took some time off during college. Picking back up in ‘06 you really started to see more colors especially with different zoa strains. In ‘08 while working for an aquarium service company I met a guy (who used to work at the same shop) that was doing zoas. I saw kedd’s red’s for the first time and my mind was blown lol. I love them because they are, for the most part, pretty forgiving. Certainly more-so than acros. They also come in pretty every color imaginable- you can’t be that.

The name game sucks, I’m not gonna mince words. Like all hobbies there’s exploitive people out there. That didn’t seem to come on strong until ‘11-‘15. The fact is there are some strains that command a higher price for various reasons and people that take care of them and share them with others deserve to be rewarded. It’s not always easy to grow these things.

My hands down favorite are black rainbows and they came from Mark at Ultimate Corals years back. Same family as mind tricks, el corazon/after burners, burning embers and a few others.

If you want an inexpensive,colorful tank, with easy maintenance you’ve got to go with zoas.

Even though I'm a stick guy, I have a few "high end" zoas. They grow fast and are a great way to make some $.
