BTA's are TOUGH!!! I have had them shredded by powerheads, nothing but a small piece of the foot left. I put that piece in the sump and within a month, it was healed and growing.
Most recently, I had an 8" BTA that I moved when upgrading tanks. It didn't like the move, hid, split, bleached, shrunk to 1", and I thought it was a goner. Now it is back in the light (both of them) and growing, currently they are 2" or so.
Best bet for recovery, is clean stable parameters and good light. I don't feed my nems, because I don't want crazy growth and splits.
