Specifically queen angels. Has anybody kept a large angel long term? I have a queen that is almost into adulthood.

I would say they steadily get more aggressive from juveniles into younger adults. My question is what happens when they become adults.

Do they get more aggressive into adulthood then chill out after a few years as they get older? Do they steadily get more aggressive as they age years into adulthood? Or do they just stay aggressive?

Some get territorial while others mellow out as they age. Atlantic species seem to be jerks as they mature

I would say mine has been less territorial, had him 15 months or so. Just a total butt. Will charge fish for no reason and chase them just for being in the way. Probably get a small nipped fin once a week on somebody. I have 5 tangs and a moorish idol. The moorish idol sticks up for himself when messed with, but received a nipped fin yesterday that has me questioning whether to keep the queen. 235 gallon.

Atlantics are almost always more aggressive in my experience, especially in that 4" to 8" range. Like others said, adults are a mixed bag, but if I wanted a less aggro angel I would never choose an Atlantic.

Well I am stuck with this one unless I get rid of her. She is around 6 inches, surprised it hasn't fully transitioned yet.

I am thinking this is very normal behavior for a 6 inch queen. Just wondering how much hope there is for things getting less aggressive in the future.

6 inches is nowhere near full grown for a queen, so I'm not surprised it's still mid transition. Whether or not she/he mellows out in the future is up to the fish. I've seen very large Frenches (10+ inches) calm down considerably, but those were obviously very large tanks.

Yup- that’s the aggression I’m referring to

Well I just saw the sailfin tang go after the moorish idol over access to the cleaner shrimp so this might not be the queens fault after all, no way to know for sure.

The sailfin tang spends the entire day trying to get cleaned by the 2 cleaner shrimp and neon blue goby. I guess he doesn't like competition.

The moorish idol is the best fish I have owned in 20+ years, got to make sure there are no problems.

Sailfin is in my top 3 tangs for being nasty. other two are sohal and clown

I'm stocking a 310 with large angels, idols, tangs, butterflies

I have my Imperator, he is kind of aggressive and about to change colors. I read above about Atlantic Queens being more aggressive. Where do I find non-Atlantic Queens? I'll be QT'ing a Queen in a few months. I have a divider to manage the introductions, but want to give myself a best chance

Queen angels only live in the Atlantic. I did a lot of research and talked to a lot of people and keeping a queen and emperor together is probably not going to end well. Even I decided not to try it, and I tend to push the limits if I think it is possible. I have a queen with lots of corals and a large clam, a healthy moorish idol, and 3 yellow tangs. According to most - my clam should be eaten, my moorish idol should have died over a year ago, and my trio of yellow tangs should have killed each other. But I decided my 2 dream fish (queen+emp), was not worth the risk.

If by idol you mean moorish idols, just get 1. If you get 2 or more they will all die. This has been well documented.

A divider works well, It is how I introduced tangs and the moorish idol to the queen angel and other tangs. 2 weeks divided and they were best friends after the divider came out.

You may be able to get a queen and emp to get along if you have like 5 large angels. Never tried it but it seems like it could spread out the aggression. You have a large tank but 5 angels will still push the space limits, and I wouldnt try a french. In reality they probably need more than 600 gallons, full grown they are massive.

Here goes nothing. I started with 3 and sold the one that got there first, had dibs and would not stop with the fighting. The other two have gotten along since day one even together in a 36 gallon QT for two weeks. My tangs fought in QT. Not the idols. In DT they are doing well. I've seen two borderline skirmishes in two months, there is a dom in the pair. I think I got lucky and got M/F though. You could say I have a big pair

Anyone know how to isolate on buying non-Atlantic Queen angels?

my emperor angel is the boss of the tank and has become less mean as time has passed but still holds firm in maintaining “peace”. my maculosis in the other hand has become a dbag as time has progressed

tend to be able to be visually distinguished they have different characteristics. often under different names too. queen angel, blue angel etc. to my understanding though all queen angels are atlantic and found in the Caribbean

I've heard ones from Belize have more color. Those should be Caribbean, no?
