I notice the hum of my pumps just sitting in the room and I wonder if the inside of my aquarium is a big echo box. Has there been any serious examination of the acoustic environment inside a residential aquarium, and how it affects the animals inside them?

It's a good question. My noisiest components (skimmer and return pump) are in the sump which I can't imagine much noise gets up to the dt from but I've wondered the same

Apparently the ocean today is very loud, so fish are used to a lot of noise wether its in the ocean or in our tanks.

A blue whale can reach dB level of 180 or so. That is a jet engine lol.

Waves crashing on reefs can be from 70-90 db.

So tons of noise is already present. Then add clicks from other fish, grunts from grunts, snaps from snappers eating foods, etc. etc. It can be noisy place as is.
