It seems the vast majority of used setups have a canister filter. Does using a canister filter tend to result in a much higher rate of failure?

i do not believe so. there are many reefs that run on canisters. i believe it boils down to desire and availability. if you want your reef to succeed, it will. same with availability. you have to make time for it

It could
Food goes in the new tank
Often too much with new people
Food goes into filter so out of sight out of mind
Food turns into ammonia
A deadly but invisible process

I would suggest they once belonged to people who found that cleaning and maintaining a canister was too much trouble. I never liked them.
