So I have what I think are diatoms. But lately I've noticed there are little bubbles forming on the surface where its growing. Is that normal? Is it releasing anything that could harm fish and necessitate some more frequent water changes? I'll try and attach a pic.

could be the start of A Cyano Outbreak.. or if tank is new it could be nitrogen gas being released depending on how deep your sand bed is

just let it go be patient and wait it out.. since you more then likely don't have any aquatic life at least you shouldnt at this point. How are you making your salt water? RODI i hope? Diatoms are from light and nutrients in water and or silicate. what are your parameters right now?

I have hermit crabs. I am using pre mixed Rodi and salt mix from a LFS. (only a ten gallon tank, it's easiest that way) The tank is already cycled but I do have high nitrate. By the time I change it it's usually around 40ppm. And I top off with store bought DI.

So I did a water change just because. And I played around with the sand and it's clumping. Does this help narrow anything down?

I also used quick start to help cycle the tank which is that live bacteria in a bottle thing

I know this is an old thread... but did you ever figure out what this was?? And did it stop?! I have the same thing happening! Tank is a month old!
