Hey now. I was wondering if filter rollers really work? Do they make the water crystal clear or just get the big stuff out?

We had a known speaker give a speech in our local club and he stated the holy trinity is Filter roll, skimmer, and fuge.

I’m doing a brackish tank and just want the best mechanical filtration I can get

My Clarisea is one of the best pieces of equipment I own. Yes it cleans my water better than socks and I only have to change the roll every two months since they launched the XL rolls and no longer wash socks. True advance in the hobby imo

I have the X-Filter 1.0 and it's the best investment I've made on the tank.

I was running socks before, and was happy with the result, just not the effort of constantly washing.

They can make the water super clean, but I didn't want it to be absolutely perfect.
I run a triple down-pipe setup, only the main pipe goes through the filter, which is roughly 99% of the flow. The other 1% and the emergency pipe don't go via the filter, this gives me some bypass, and seeing as I have a tonne of pods in both the sump and tank, they are somehow getting through, which is amazing news. Nature finds a way.

I'm currently running 25nm roll, down from my previous 35nm, but I think next time I order some i'll go back to 35nm, as it just gets used up quicker for no visible improvement (obviously it is better, but you cannot see it).

A 35nm roll lasted me over 3 months, I think the 25nm will last me maybe 2 months at best.

Check out the X-Filter, I decided on this over all other options, even though it's slightly more expensive, everyone gives it great feedback and it performs great.

Can you use a skimmer and chaeto with a brackish tank?

no, I love this forum so much I decided to stay even though I flipped from salt to brackish.

no skimmer, no cheato From what my research has shown me

edit: there are however other plants I can use to set it up like a fresh water refugium

This is what my sump looks like. Water flows into the front chamber and then overflows into the compartment with the filter sock.

would I put this in the front chamber where the drain pipe is or let the water overflow into it?

Im happy with the bubble magus filter roller. They dont clear the water of things smaller than 40 microns ime like dust or bacteria. Youd need something else for that.

I have a Klir 7 that is designed to fit in the hole where the filter sock goes. I’ve had mine almost two months and so far so good. Couple of minor issues to get things going but that was more unique to my sump design. The Klir should easily work in yours.

For me it was a great improvement over having to swap filter socks every few days.
