Do filter socks get smaller or bigger as they age?

Good question for you reefers. I need a certain sized micron sock running in my tank at all times. Will washing them make the size bigger or smaller?

Bigger...but as they get dirty they block smaller sized detritus.
You would need to change the socks very regularly to keep the micron size the same constantly.

If it's for the pods (saw your other thread) don't worry, only a few will make it into the socks.

Yes it will be, what size do you need?

You could wash on a gentle wash, not use bleach will help

mesh socks as opposed to wool socks may hold up better?

Could you maybe use a filter roller such as Clarisea as a sort of filter wool? Maybe some inside the socks or in a filter cup?

If you only need under 25 then it'll take a long time for 1-2 microns to get to that size.

Will purchasing 1 micron mesh bags be equivalent to I micron felt bag? I see a lot of negative reviews on the felt. Why is that?

cleaning mesh is easier, I think that is the only reason.

But between mesh and felt, my guess would be the felt would filter better as they are much thicker...but if you trust the 1 micron label on a mesh sock then it should filter as good as the felt.

I'm guessing this is only for a short period until the ich clears? If so I would go with the felt probably just to be safe.
