Do hawk fish hide for long periods of time?

Unless he’s very sick, I’d give a big “no” to hiding. That’s an active fish, as I believe you noted. Keep us posted.

OP, if he hasn’t jumped, my guess is he’s deep in hiding, maybe overly stressed out by the Tomato Clown pair. I like the “stubbier” species of Clownfish too, they’re cute, but it’s the aggression that makes me stick to the common Ocellaris over Tomato / Maroon/ Fire / Clarkii.

Just checked surrounding area no fish corpse/checked sump too. completely MIA. Saw him last night. My only cleanup crew are 3 turbo snails and 2 peppermint shrimp that are always hiding in rocks. Could his corpse dissapear that fast?

There's also the clean up crew that you didn't add … incidental scavengers like brittle stars and bristle worms …. not to mention bacteria. A dying fish can wedge itself into spots very hard to see; even under rocks. You did not say how large the fish was. Small fish corpse can get reduced in a day; larger one a bit longer. I had a damsel die in my QT and I left it to see …. within three days there wasn't anything left, not even bones.

Out of curiosity, how much did he cost? They run about $60-$80 here in Central Florida.

Curious, did you end up finding the little guy?
After seeing this thread, now I wanna know too!

I had a fish go completely MIA before with a fresh water tank I had, turned out it had jumped and had fallen down next to the power cables etc and managed to find him and he was dried out. Think I put it under the tap to wash off some of the dog fur build up that it fell into and it wriggled, back into the tank it went and it lived for a good while longer until it jumped again (there was a lid on the tank but a small opening on one corner).

I had my hawk fish missing a day ago, assumed it might be hiding. Looked behind the tank, in sump, in overflow and no sight of him. Yesterday I used my camera and looked under the tank( with the RedSea there’s very little space under the tank, unfortunately I found him in the back under the tank, I think he was there for an entire day so.

I did purchase the RedSea net cover along with the tank just never put it together, needless to say will be putting it together very soon now.

Sorry to hear of your loss.

I lost a Naoko Wrasse from jumping.
I had literally just picked up a Red Sea DIY Tank Mesh Lid but hadn't fit it just yet and whilst I was doing something with the tank, it jumped out, hit me and landed on the ground (or maybe it was the sump), either way it wasn't great. I put it back in and it was too injured and later died.

Is it wrong that i “want” mine to go missing. :astonished-face: :rolling-on-the-floor-laughing:
I can relate, I had a fish or two that I kind of regretted.

One I think got injured one day and didn't recover (Whipfin Wrasse).
The other which I liked, but he was a jerk (and starved out my Allens Sandsifter), was a 2 Spot Bristletooth tang.
I'm told he died whilst he was at the LFS when they were looking after my stuff when I moved.

Holy thread resurrection! My flame hawkfish isn't a jumper, but he is literally out all the time. Always waiting, watching...

LOL
Didn't even notice that myself.

Yeah my Hawk is always out and about... watching everything.
