Do I have diatoms?

Hey there everyone,
I wonder if you can help me. I have recently started to notice a brownish dirt particles starting to cover my live rock, small particles on the sand, covering my tanks back wall and also small brown particles floating in the water. My wave makers are also starting to get covered in this brownshish stuff. Any idea what it could be?

Is it a new tank? How long has it been set up? How long have you had the lights on? More than likely diatoms which is a natural part of a maturing tank and harmless but a few more details would let folks confirm that.

hi - sure. The tank has been running for 7/8 months and I have the lights on for 12 hours. I understand if it’s diatoms I should let it do it’s thing? Is it common for it to have brown floating particles in the water?

If it has been up for 7-8 months, it should have been through the new tank cycle already. Mine went through it about 2 months in. I would just check all the normal tank stats and see if anything has changed. If not perhaps one of the other members have an idea. Good luck
