Do I have to dilute powered Potassium Nitrate.

So I normally dose Nitrate. I struggle to keep it above 1ppm.

I have been using Brightwell NeoNitro and NeoPhos.

Attempting to save some money I researched and ordered the following.


4 pounds for $15 vs $8.99 for 500ml from Brightwell.


Question here is. In power form can I just mix it into a high flow section of the sump?

Does it need to be mixed with RO/DI first?

I am wondering if there any chemistry reason that it would need to go into RO/DI first?


Bonus points for anyone that can direct me to a bulk phosphate source.

What concentration do you mix yours at?

I cant remember the concentration but how ever you do it. Measure how much if a difference it makes in 1 gal of seawater and then apply it to your tanks volume.

IMO, food grade sodium nitrate is a better choice than potassium nitrate due to the potential for accumulating potassium, but here's a calculator for dosing potassium nitrate:

When I put in the calculator should I use Nitrates 5.69 or 0.76 and Phosphates 0.50 or 0.05, bellow is an example for the Nitrates calculator. For Phosphates I'm using the 0.05 calculation meaning as long as I stay under <0.10 I'm good.

Confused by your question.

This calc is simply telling you how strong your stock solution is by telling you how much a certain quantity will raise the level in the inputted tank size.


Example from your screenshot # 2: for every 20ml of your inputted stock solution (5teaspoons mixed into 800ml)
It will raise your 160g tank by .76ppm nitrate.
