So I upgraded my old hydors to vortech MP60's (which was what I was recommended to get) and I am shocked by how much power there is behind the water flow and I am beginning to wonder if they are too much for my tank. Even at 20% they are so powerful. My corals don't seem to be responding well. Will they eventually get used to the new water flow or do I have too much?
300 gallon tank, 80 gallon sump, mixed reef
Thanks Sean

It shouldn’t be too much. Drop them down to 10%. What setting are you using? What do you mean by mixed reef? A stock list would help :)

I have the same problem. My LPS are unhappy. I'm controlling the (2) MP60 with an Apex so 20% is minimum strength. I ended up redoing my rock work and "un"centering the (2) MP60 - it is a little better but still considering changing to MP40. Hopefully my LPS adapts to the higher flow.

Yeah chowberg I have the wxm on my apex as well so maybe I need to eliminate that, which would stink because I see the value in it. But it can’t go below 20% with that. I have several leathers, mushrooms, gonipora, birdsnest, trumpet, bubble, duncan, polyps and more.

Until the corals adapt maybe just have the apex run them,
1 hour on, 1 hour off
or
on/ off on opposite times

Could you shut one off for now? Like run one on 20% short pulse and when corals are adapted, turn the other one on too.

If you had a 8' tank, you might be able to dial it down, but if you have a 6' tank and mostly slower flow corals, I would say sell the MP60's and get 3 MP40's.

There is no way two MP60s are creating too much flow in a 300g tank. NO WAY. I have two MP40s at 100% in a 75g and it's almost perfect. I have two MP40s in a 150g and it isn't near enough flow at 100% to disturb corals. Have you tried an anti-sync NTM or Reefcrest profile? Do not replace them with MP40s; they likely aren't strong enough for the glass thickness and they'll be way under powered for the tank.

I was thinking the same. But his corals are used to no flow with korillas so....

Yeah, I will definitely try some of the offsetting and getting everything used to the new flow and see how they react over the next little bit before I downgrade them.
