I was recently viewing a thread that talks about removing the filter pad as bit does more damage than it helps as long as you have enough LR. how much is enough LR for a 20g? Would love to stop buying filter pads if my nitrates and ammonia would indeed stay down without it! I have cheato algae in my hang on back filter already to help keep nitrates down. Tank is only 3 months old. Has 6.5 lbs LR and 2 in live SB.

I would add 10-12 pounds of live rock. Personally, I like to have filter pads to catch debris that is in the water column, but it is not necessary to have them. Do you have a skimmer?

I do use a pad sometimes for a short period of time like when i use a baster to blow debris off my rock before a water change to catch debris. Then i will remove . If you leave it in it will become a nitrate sponge.

What exactly is everyone calling "filter pads" the floss? And are you saying that if you have a skimmer you dont need a filter? How would you get rid if all the debris in the water column without a dilter?
