So I was looking over how to build a DIY screen top but I realized with the two pieces of HoB equipment I will be using it will be a PIA to build. So If the fish I am getting are not known jumpers, would I be ok going topless?

IMO even some fish that don't typically jump will on occasion.

I would at least recommend a canopy...

Yea I thought so lol I guess I'll just bite the bullet and build one

I would cover as much as possible shep. Go with the DYI screen for the majority of the tank. I would not bother trying to get all crazy with cuts to accommodate the HOB stuff.

One thing I've done in the past when I had odd shaped tanks, or HOB equipment like yourself, is build the largest square/rectangle possible with the screening material. Then get some clear acrylic and cut that to shape around your obstacles. Drill a few holes to accept plastic zip ties and tie it to your screen. This ensures all pieces are covered, and you still get the gas exchange that the mesh screen provides. I would not recommend the "egg-crate" light diffuser material as a substitute for the acrylic. A fish will find a hole, and the 1/2" voided grid the diffuser is made of is a prime spot. I had a Blue Spot Jawfish find his was through the egg-crate so he could tan under the halides. Acrylic works best. Make sure to get at least 1/4" under T5/LED's, or 3/8" under halides to prevent warping. POP_DISPLAYS on eBay is a great vendor for acrylic if you cannot locate any locally.
