Hey guys I got a 14 gal biocube and I keep seeing videos of people using the protein skimmer. I want to have a small bta and some coral. What do you guys think I should do??

You do not need a protein skimmer. You can remove just as much protein via weekly 10% WC. I ran my 8g for 2yrs without one. Then my 26g for 1yr without one. Never an issue.

It's not a matter of what we think you should do. But more of what would be the over all benefits of running one on your tank. Do you plan of stocking heavy? Do you find regular water changes a total pain?

No I don't mind doing water changes I love this hobby so I don't mind it I'm just seeing what would work best to keep corals and my future clowns happy. I really want to do some frogspawn and some zoas maybe a torch some mushrooms a toadstool but really want to keep a bta

Water changes is all you need in a tank that size. Just keep an eye on your water parameters.

I have a biocube that my friend gave me I really want to take the bio balls out also.

If they've been in the system for awhile, your best bet is to remove a lil bit of them every week and not all at the same time, your liable to send the system into a cycle by removing all that bacteria at once.

The tank just got set up like 2 weeks ago everything I read is telling me they are bad it's better to have some other media to put in it

The media of choice would be live rock, or dry rock. But there too, they will also collect detritus in them, and become a problem, where thy are positioned. Best ot just remove them and run chaeto.

This is an age old question. Yes, there are successful reefs, of all sizes, run without a protein skimmer. Yes, there are some negative impacts to using a skimmer, such as skimming out valuable trace elements. IMHO, a protein skimmer is a vital necessity of all reef aquaria, regardless of size. There are few arrows in the filtration quiver, quite as efficient at removing waste, as a good protein skimmer. In recent years small, affordable and effective skimmers have hit the market, aimed at nano-aquaria.

I don't think I'm going to run one I thinking I'm going to remove the bio balls put some live rock and I wanna get a media bag to put some charcoal in

No skimmer needed. I would recommend that you get a media basket for the middle back chamber instead of using live rock back there.

Let me rephrase this.. no skimmer needed on this tank :). I do highly believe they are the heart of the tank in larger systems.
