So I’m setting up my first reef tank. It’s a 60 gallon and it’s going to have a couple clown fish and maybe a watchman goby. I plan on keeping the bio load pretty low I want the corals to be the main feature. That being said.. do I need a UV steralizer? Is it a necessary piece of the puzzle? If I do get one , when should I start running it? Right at the beginning of the cycle or until the cycle is complete . I have all dry rock and dry sand and plan on using DR. Tim’s all in one kit and Microbacter7 for the cycle

meh, some people like them, I don't since I think they damage the plankton populations and such. Unless you are dealing with some disease and cannot fallow its better to spend the money to get a fuge.

unrelated: the cycle might take a while since its all dry

I have my fuge all setup under my tank in the sump and when I’m ready to fill with water I will be buying a good sized chunk of chaeto

I plan on letting the tank cycle with the lights off for as long as it takes . I’ve forced myself to slow down. This hobby makes you want to get everything and every tool all at once. I gotta relax and remember good things take time .

Exactly, you don't need the lights off btw, just be mindful to not blast it with really heavy stuff or strong direct sunlight, roomlights and indirect sunlight are fine.

Thanks for the advice! I should be filling up the tank in a couple weeks once everything is set in place !
