I’m picking up an an apex classic tomorrow and it comes with the vdm, pm1 (with temp, orp, ph), wxm module with a energy bar. The thing is, it doesn’t come with a base unit. I’m picking it all up for $50 so I know I’m getting a good deal but is the base unit necessary? I’m assuming it is but how much would it cost?

When you say the base unit, you mean the brain, like this

If so, yes, you need one of those. If it's the display, that's optional.

You need the base unit which is the brain. The PM1 is just an extension for additonal probes.

Yeah I mean the brain. But for $50, I’m assume I’m getting a good deal for everything but the brain? How much would the brain cost?

Brains run $80-110 and assure the ethernet portion works

It's a good deal. You may or may not need many of the modules you bought, but if that's the case you can always sell later. I would pick u a brain from here/ebay and you'll be good to go!

Yeah haha do I actually need any of the modules that I’m purchasing? I don’t have any Vortech pumps or eco tech lights are anything.

And also how much could I sell the unnecessary modules for? It would be nice to sell them to fund the brain.

At it's core, you'll likely want the brain, the energy bar, the ph probe, and the temperature probe. Everything else is for controlling pumps/lighting as you said. You can easily fund the brain selling off those, or the orp probe and pm1.

Sweet, and is there a specific pricing on those? Haha sorry for all the questions I’m totally a noob at apex and pricing their products.

I would double confirm the probes (pH+temp) work before you rely on them as well. if remember correctly they're meant to be kept wet and fall out of calibration when they dry.

It really depends on the condition of them, but generally I've seen the vdm/wxm go for around $60-85 shipped. You can always check the msot recent sales by searching the drygoods to make sure those prices are still accurate or if you want to sell everything together, there's an option to list the items and ask more people than may read this thread how much you should price something at. I can't remember what used pm1 or orp probes go for.

@landlubber At least for me, I've never had any issues with temp probes being dry. There's a way to get dried out ph probes to recalibrate by storing in pH 4.0 for 24 hours- that's been sucsessful for me in about 70% of cases.

Yeah they were kept wet but I’ll definitely calibrate them.

Ok just figured out it comes with TWO energy bars so how much can I sell an energy bar for haha?

As long as the condition is good, there isn't any corrosion and all outlets work well (and the obvious that it's an EB8 and not a DC8), $80-100 each, give or take.
