I and in 2 months with my first Reef. With a six chamber sundt, one section I placed a phosphate tag end a bag of charcoal. So my question is, is it okay, will it hurt, would it help, or did I just waste my money and get rid of them????

I wouldn't blindly add those things. Test your parameters and then add whatever you need to to bring certain levels into an acceptable range.

I’ve got purigen in my tank but also add a bit of carbon for a few days each month, just in case.

They are all going to be helpful. Typically most tanks have some carbon and a phosphate removing mechanism. The key is to go with good carbon and have good flow moving through the medias. Purigen is also a handy tool, especially in skimmerless tanks.
