Hi everyone,
I’m setting up my new redsea reefer 250 and I’m looking for some clarification for the sump. I was wondering the purpose of the black mesh it came with. Do I need to leave this in when I’m cycling the tank?
Thanks for your help,

Welcome to R2R!
It's a mechanical filtration sponge used to keep large debris from entering your return chamber. This is especially helpuful if you run any sort of refugium and don't want macro algae cloggins up your return pump.

Welcome to Reef2Reef! If you get a chance, you can post a message in the meet and greet forum so we can learn more about you and your tank!

That black filter is there for a few purposes- it can be used as a filter to trap detritus or prevent any macroalgaes you're growing in your refugium from escaping or to stop bubbles coming from your skimmer. It's completely optional and you can remove it if you want.

Welcome! I agree with the above answers. I always have something in that space, sometimes one of those phosphate removing pads works but if you don't want it there and you aren't having bubbles or lots of debris escape then you can remove it.

+1. Additionally, if your skimmer ever leaks micro bubbles, then it will also keep those from returning to the main tank. Welcome to R2R!

Thanks a lot for all the great information. I’ll be sure to make a post in the meet and greet as I believe I’ll become a regular here :)
