I was reading up about my sand bed and it suggest to replace your sand bed every 2-5 years. I am looking for advice if this is something that is a necessity or it doesn’t really matter.
Over the course of vacuuming and everything, sand can get sucked out of the tank. If the bed gets too low you can add new sand in if you want. Do not however intentionally siphon all of your sand so that you can add new sand.
@ScottyD36 I‘m guessing that you‘re looking at threads related to “old tank syndrome” where detritus collects all over the place and creates issues. So the recommendation was to replace the sand.
Adopting a maintenance schedule will help. For example when I do water changes every couple of weeks I vacuum one-third of my sand bed each time. I also try to blow off the detritus that collects on the rocks using a turkey blaster. About once every 18 months, I clean out my sump (vacuum in place).
