Do i need to use RO/DI water?

Most people do yes. But it all depends on your water where you are at. Very few people I would say get clean metal free phos free chlorine free water good enough to use in a reef tank. I used to use tap water but found its much less maintenance and better for live stock to use ro/di water.

Yes an ro/di unit is a great investment to make. With using pure water you know what you are putting into your tank and will help to keep you from getting some algae issues that occur with using tap water. The premixed salwater that petsmart sells is pricey and depending on the size of your system can add up very quickly. Also you will want to have on hand fresh rodi water to use for topping off evaporation that will occur in your tank.

Im using Tap water on my Fowlr and I have a TON of algae.Using RO on my reef...No Algae so I'd say an RO Unit would be a wise investment.

I did the tap thing for years with so little success my tank was pittiful. Got an rodi and within a few months I was seeing changes. Over the next year or so my tank blossomed into a thing of beauty. I can get water with less than 30tds but it don't compare to the rodi. Buck up and do it. You will thank us later.

I would not use the PUR filter. It does not provide adequate filtration to remove all the impurities in the water that can be detrimental to SW system.

The pur filter will only remove most of the chlorine and a some of the heavy metals. The phosphates and other can only be removed by the ro process

Although we have great tasting well water, there is still clear iron and metals in it. I definately use RO/DI.
The one thing that you will want to make sure of is where ever you decide to buy your water at is that they keep up with replacing their filters. Some places are not always good at keeping their systems maintained. I would suggest picking up a hand held tds meter so that you can test the water to make sure it its good. The other thing that you will want to keep in mind going this route is not only do you want to have enough water for doing your water changes but you will also want rodi water to use for topping of in between water changes due to evaporation. With a smaller tank buying your water is more feasible but down the road you may still want to consider buying a unit for the home. Not only will you have water on hand for your tank but if your system has a di bypass you can use the ro water for cooking and drinking. I also collect some of my waste water and store it using it to water my plants with, which the brine water from what I have read is good for plants
