Do I really need a skimmer for cycling?

so I’m doing the Red Sea reef mature kit for cycling my first tank

I have not started it yet and was just reading the directions

It says I’m suppose to have my skimmer up and running?

Several others I consulted on here said no I shouldn’t need it yet so I had not purchased one yet.

What say you? Is Red Sea nuts?

No you don't need it running during cycling, but it can run at that time to break in the skimmer. Your choice.

That’s what I thought also, I dunno why the reef mature kit is requesting it

Skimmers are great for removing organics which does help during cycling. Is it required, no.

I just turn everything on when I doing my cycling.

Like stated above "you can run it so it gets broken in and you get broken in, on how it works. I would not run any lights until your tank is cycled. Algae needs light to grow and you might not want that . Maybe you do?

If you are using the Red Sea Reef Mature kit as directed, then you do need a skimmer. That kit contains NoPoX, which they have you dose during the cycle.

As others have stated, you normally don't need a skimmer for the cycle. However, you really should use one if using the RS reef mature kit.

So They want you to carbon dose and run a light and skimmer while cycling. Hum
I wonder the reasons for this.
Carbon = food ?
Skimmer = air / oxygen ?
Light = ?

When on a new build I fire it up around week 3 for adjusting and break in purposes.

I started my 425xl with Red Sea Reef Mature and after 1 day I drained the tank and started again, going to use a different product.
The Red Sea reef mature kit made my whole house smell like an open sewer, the wife was not happy.

Keep us updated on how the reef mature program works for you. I didn't use it for my current tank, but I've looked into it a bit and am interested in using it for a possible new tank.
