Will slow waterflow kill my clownfish if i didnt buy powerheads? is it really needed in an aquarium?

I only have a 12 gal with 1 clown. I do not use power heards. I did get one at one time, but just didn't like the look of the extra cord and the powerhead on the side of the glass. My clown is about 5 yrs old now.

Hi
Yes you do. I asked myself the same question and found that some animals and corals will survive but it's very limiting. Do yourself and your tank a favor, follow the basic model for reef or saltwater tank setups.

Yes, water flow is one of the most important things for a healthy tank. You will have all kinds of problems if you skip them. There are some that are really adorable, look at Hydors or WP-

Powerheads help with gas exchange which helps the fish "breathe" better. Point it towards the surface for a better exchange. At least that's what I've gotten from stalking threads for so long haha.

I have the hydors 180 and it works great in my 10 gallon nano reef along with my Aquaclear filter. My 2 clown fish really enjoy getting right where the flow starts. I had a 240 but that was way to much power for the fish and corals. I bought mine off amazon. And even though I'm a "newbie" to this hobby I watch a lot of you tube videos and best of all everyone here is really helpful:)

What size tank, how strong of a pump, most likely it will not kill your clownfish. Are you using a sump pump or just a hang on back filter? If it's just a hang on back filter I would definitely get a power head.

I have a 50g cube tank, LPS only, I use to have two powerheads on my tank, but one broke, i rearranged some rock work and as my meat corals expanded they hated the water flow being pushed off of the front glass. Since it's a cube the water flow easily bounces around from just the main pump. I've been running my tank for several months now just on the main pump, but I do leave one power head in there just in case like during a broad feeding / dosing / when I stir things up.

Yes absolutely, without one you may have dead spots that can cause white spots on your live rock. Im looking into getting a gyre maxspect , there one of the newest powerheads/wavemakers. Ive done some research and there absolutely amazing products.

Like TomatoSauce stated (that made me laught just typing it lol), we need more information on your setup to determine if you need additional powerheads. Along with the size of the tank, sump or no sump, and additional filtration....we also need to know if you are keeping coral or other inverts. In a nano/small tank, the return from the sump or HOB may be enough depending on the live rock setup and livestock.
