Do keep covers on your Wave Makers?

Do you keep the filter foam covers in your wave makes? I was, but them they just collect all kinds of crud. So I took them off but now my Gony is getting awfully close to being made into sushi!

I never kept them on. Never had issues though I have had a RBTA get a little too close for comfort. Not sure if it learned the hard way or not, but it did change its mind on location..
