Hey guys i have my tank set up close to the kitchen. I was wondering if the odors and smoke or vapors affect my system in any way ? Everytime i cook i feel like the smoke and vapors are gunna affect my water and i have a rimless tank with no lid to cover it. Also dust from when i vacumm the carpet.

I'm sure it does, but it is not as bad as when you stick your arm in the tank to clean it. I heard of a guy who got nervous when too many people were in his house because of all the carbon dioxide they putting into the air. Lol. My tank is right next to my kitchen and never had any problems. No worries.

Only time I have noticed some affect a tank was when I was doing service I noticed in houses where people are heavy smokers there tanks were darn near impossible to keep healthy... It's almost like the corals and fish had cancer LOL
but that could also be due to the fact that I also noticed people who smoked heavily in there house also tended not to be good house keepers and there tanks were always a filthy as the rest of the place...

Lol ok both these stories are funny i can just picture a dirty house and a tank where the fish and corals smoke , but the story of the guy being scared about too many people in the house is ridiculous. I dont really stick my arm in the tank but well im glad to hear that someone else does have a tank near the kitchen and it hasnt been affected. Makes me feel much better thanks

Haha seriously, but I really did notice that the tanks I serviced where people smoked in the house were always much much dirtier... Dust and salt caked up on the fans and lights and dust and hair and salt 4 inches thick under the tank covering every square inch of the wet dry as well as the pumps and everything else... Usually the initial service would take me 4 hours of cleaning and vacuuming and scrubbing so that it looked respectable, I mean after all my name was the one they were talking people took care of the tank, but you can only do so much when they only want you to show up 1 time a month you know

This is a good reason to always keep carbon running just to absorb anything that could possibly contaminate the tank.

Did you notice any trouble with nitrates on these tanks. I clean my tanks very well but my father loves to sit right in front of them while he smokes [emoji33]. I cannot seem to get low nitrates even with biweekly water changes.

Smoke has VERY little mass. Smells have even less. Unless you are overdoing it, I can't imagine cooking affecting the water chemistry much. Maybe they get hungry though from the smell...

I don't think him sitting there will have any effect, I'm talking about homes where's there's 2 or 3 cigarette smokers who all smoke over a pack or two a day in the house and nicotine and tar had literally stained everything from the paint on the walls to the ceilings and furniture... Really gross houses who would have been better with a maid service than an aquarium service LOL

Lol. OK just a thought. I think part of my problems is old live rock. It has spent a decade as a fowler and now I'm trying my hardest to make a reef. Thinking I may just have to pitch the rock when I upgrade.

It depends on how bad a cook you are. :puke:
