Do they provide any benefit to the corals? Or is it more just for our own visual likeness so that we don't get a disco ball effect?

They reduce the severity of individual color caustics. Fancy way of saying less disco ball. Whether disco ball is harmful or in some way less desirable than a homogenous light source when striking coral tissue is beyond my knowledge. They certainly don’t make the light “wrap” around the coral like a t5 bulb will do. Even diffused, the light is still striking the coral from the same source footprint roughly. The colors just don’t separate white as much through the surface agitation

As I understand it, it's about blending the LED colors so that there's more uniformity across the tank and less spotlighting/disco ball effect. I believe it helps distribute the spectrum more evenly.

thanks! I have an AI Prime and was considering it because it sounds cool but I don't really need it.. I run mostly blues anyways so I don't rally have a disco ball effect

People have certainly been keeping reef tanks successfully without them for a long time. If anything, maybe they make a good thing (LED lighting) a bit better, but definitely not a necessity.
