Do mushrooms divide because they are growing, stressed or both?

I have healthy mushrooms that are growing like crazy with no sign of dividing and one that is in possibly too little light that just did. So, I'm curious about what motivates them to divide.

I think they divide when conditions are 'right' - and they are growing. With stress I see them moving around - and even floating free - hoping to find a better place.

All of the above. Shrooms are super forgiving but once acclimated to stable parameters they can be really fussy with major swings, new environments, flow, lighting changes etc.
This will sometimes cause them to split, walk and drop pieces of foot babies, let go to find less stressful spot.
Honestly I intentionally try to keep some of my shrooms uncomfortable so they drop babies.
