But according to this posting carbon will remove the copper:

Will carbon (Seachem pouch designed for Tidal 35 HOB) remove or significantly reduce the level of chelated copper in my 16 gallon qt tank? If no, is there any reason *not* to run carbon during the copper phase of qt?

That will also remove beneficial metals in a reef tank. Just get an RODI unit and stop trying to go around it or buy (non copper distilled) distilled water. It isn't worth the headache to use tap water and/or is just really not going to be as efficient if you are just needing to make metal free freshwater.
