I run a Cryptic Fuge and have yet to see any pods in it. I have plenty in the dt and my algae barrel that gravity feeds into the fuge.

So do they actually need light to survive?

I have rock and sand in it along with my skimmer and return pump. I have a lot of sponge covering to rock at this point. Also have cerith snails, a nerite snail, and some zebra periwinkles and a sun coral colony.

If you want pods in the fuge, move some LR from the display and offer phyto, I am confident you'll see good results.

Any fauna/flora that is native from where they can see sun light. Will benefit from a photoperiod for their circadian rhythm. This could be as simple as ambient room light though.

How about the intense grow lights we use? Would a lot of light affect them?

Probably very little, most have complex eyes similar to insects. Where motion and light intensity changes are the evolutionary goal. Why its hard to swat a fly.

Ive never seen a study related to copepods, but studies on bumble bees kept in greenhouses with horticulture lights have no ill effect on brood production.

And bees have a very strict circadian rhythm compared to other arthropods.

There was a study on terrestrial plants, done in japan i think? Where they removed the sleep period, lights were on 24/7, that eventually lead to the plants withering away.

Again not copepods [emoji23] but further evidence that circadian rhythms are not just important to higher lifeforms.

I think i got very off topic sorry OP :(

I use a grow light over my algae barrel and have a ton of large pods in there, especially in the cheato. I’m guessing the cryptic nature of the fuge is an area they do not like? Why would they not be in there even though I have rock from my dt in there, I I also physically placed large pods in the fuge and plus my algae barrel feeds into the fuge. Even the sand and some rock, all the snails came from the beach, I see the pods all the time turning over the rocks there.

The algae barrel is on a reverse lighting schedule but the fuge stays dark 24/7.

i have a tank with old saltwater and pods growing like crazy in there... i have no light and dont feed...they are feeding on detritus?

Was thinking of starting a thread on this, but decided to bring this one back instead.

So, people are saying that a lit area is not necessary for pods? Just that they need to be fed phytoplankton? (others have said that macroalgae is helpful for pod raising as well)

Isn't that somewhat contradictory, since phyto need photosynthesis to grow?

I am thinking of setting up a semi-cryptic area seperated from my fish in my future DT, (i.e. a smallish area of rockwork that the fish can't get to and that would attract detritus, which would pods to grow. It would seem I also should dose phyto into this area?
