Do we know what is in Bayer?

I've personally never lost an acro from bayers dipping, I always use three rinse buckets. The first rinse bucket I shake each coral in it for about 20-30 seconds then soak in the second bucket for about 5 minutes, I give each coral a good shake in the second bucket before moving to the third. The third rinse has a few drops of Lugols and the acros sit in the third bucket for about 5 minutes. The corals sit in my bayers dip for 12-15 minutes and it is fairly strong...10 mL per 4 oz of water. I will periodically stir the dip and corals with a chopstick.

My favorite acros are deepwater...in particular dragon types. Ive probably dipped two dozen different dragons without any problems.

Since the restock started I haven't dipped any dragons yet because I haven't purchased any, but I have dipped two simplexes, a blue lagoon, and about 28 other acros.

Very curious. I've been using bayer for a few years now and never had a problem with sps rtn'ing or any problems with other corals. I guess a good question to ask is how is the dip administered?ratio of bayer to water, time in dip and how well is it rinsed?
Me personally it depends on the coral. I get mostly Acro's so for Acros I do 20-25Ml per cup of tank water. Lps and Zoas I normally only use 15ML per cup of tank water and I always dip for 10mins. Sps seem to be very accepting of Bayer IME because I've seem them with full PE during a 25ml dip.

Do you always run carbon?

I always run carbon 3/4 cup of carbon in a reactor. I change it out once every three weeks to a month. IMO it is wise to run carbon 24/7 in an SPS tank.
Completely agree. I was only asking because it seems like a few of the people on here with problems related to bayer are in tank and after the dip. I've never lost any coral to a bayer dip either but wonder if people that don't use carbon could be seeing a build up? I did say that about the red dragon they always do great for a couple weeks and then..... goodbye. In all reality it could just be the one of those corals I can't keep? I have tons of other Acro's that thrive and do great but that one Acro has always been my nemesis [emoji20]

Dipping tonight. Two rinses..

And that bayer is nowhere near as cloudy as my dips

I can't see my frags in my dip....so far I have only lost one coral (of course one I have been wanting for awhile) after dipping. I could tell it did not do well in shipping so it was already on the decline. After the dip it went up in smoke. I don't blame the dip though and will continue to do so. 2 rinse in 2 different 2 gallon buckets.

Is it a good idea to clean surfaces, and utensils after using Bayer with a bleach solution?

I lost another cleaner shrimp a couple days ago. I found it dead the day after I got a shipment of all acro's, so they all got dipped. Idk what to do? I don't feel it's worth getting AEFW or Red bugs over shrimp? I'm not losing snails or hermits.
On a positive note my fire shrimp seems fine. I'm running carbon constantly and hoping we can figure out a way to help this?
Randy you said some of these components would break down over time and faster with light correct? So what if I added a light to my final dip bucket and kept the frags there for an hour? Maintaining temp obviously.

I don't know how much the degradation is accelerated by any given light source and intensity, but more is better, and likely UV is what is needed most.

How did you rinse them after the dip?

I rinsed them twice and the second time they sat in the bucket for 10-15 mins before I squirted them with the turkey baster

I dip with bayer, I rinse after I dip, I don't run carbon, but I do 10% water changes every 5 days. Doesn't water change remove build ups of whatever it is that gets broken down from bayer?

Not sure if its been stated yet but be careful using stuff like this. Thats a nasty chemical and shouldnt be taken lightly.

Yes, assuming it is in the water and not already stuck to surfaces or organisms. :)

So, is it a good idea to clean surfaces and utensils with a bleach solution (5 - 10%) after using Bayer?

I also do a 20% water change every week on top of using carbon. I'm still seeing problems. Listen I don't think there's a better alternative to Bayer for what it kills. But there has to be a safer way to use it?
Is the only way to be 100% sure your not introducing really bad things to put all your frags through 30 day QT? I have one tank and would love to set up a frag tank but Dam..... I can't set up a QT and a frag tank! I just don't have the room for either really.
Bayer works great and there has to be a SAFER way to use it? Hopefully as a group we can figure this out....

there is a new dip being advertised not long ago on here (maybe last week?) that said they are just as good if not better than bayer but safe for all tank inhabitans.
